Why am I still tired? And other real CPAP questions answered.

Let’s get straight to it.

“Why am I not feeling better yet? I’m still tired and don’t feel like I’m getting good sleep.”

Answer:

Firstly, everyone is different. We all have different results, different settings, different masks, different environments, different lifestyles and health concerns... see where I’m going with this? 😁

When someone asks this, and I check their data, these are the main things I usually see:

  • They’ve only been using the machine for a few weeks. It takes time. Time to treat the apnoea, and time for your brain and body to start getting proper quality sleep again. Airway pressurisation is not a magical quick fix - it always takes time.

  • Inconsistent use. If you’re using the machine for two nights, then skipping a few, then back on for five, then off for one - your body just can’t adjust. It’s like trying to get fit by going to the gym once a week. Consistency is key 🗝️

  • Unrealistic expectations. This is a big one. You’ve heard your mate say, “CPAP is great!” or “I felt like a new person after a week!” or “You’ll sleep so much better, trust me.” Then you start and… it’s not going like that at all. Cue frustration.

But remember what I said earlier - everyone is different. And being positive and patient really matters. Give your body the time it needs to reset. It’s worth it.

“What happens if the power goes out while I’m asleep — will I die?”

Short Answer: No.

Longer Answer: You’ll still breathe through the mask because it has air vents. You will wake up when the machine stops. Unless you’ve got a backup battery or something similar, you just have to wait until the power comes back on.

“I woke up with marks on my face from the mask (nasal mask under the nose). Do I need a different one?”

Answer: Not necessarily! If the mask is too tight, of course it’ll leave marks. It’s a new experience - your nose has never had anything sitting against it all night before, so it’s totally natural to get some marks early on.

Here’s a little trick: apply a small amount of papaw ointment before putting on your mask, and again in the morning. It acts as a barrier and a healer. 😀

Everyone’s journey is different.

The trick is consistency, realistic expectations, and kindness towards yourself while your body adjusts.
