Still Tired Despite Using CPAP? Here’s Why

Using CPAP doesn’t always guarantee you’ll wake up refreshed. Even experienced users can struggle with lingering fatigue, and often it comes down to how therapy is being used - not whether it’s being used at all.

1. Partial use isn’t enough

Using CPAP for just a few hours a night, or only some nights, reduces its effectiveness. Your body still experiences repeated oxygen drops and micro-awakenings, leaving you tired. Full-night, consistent use is crucial.

2. Subtle leaks and pressure issues

Even small mask leaks or slightly incorrect pressure settings can compromise therapy without obvious discomfort. Over time, these small gaps can add up to nights that look fine on paper but leave you exhausted in practice.

3. Mask and fit fatigue

A mask that feels uncomfortable can make it tempting to remove it during the night. Even brief breaks mean your airway collapses again, reducing the benefits of therapy.

4. Other underlying sleep issues

Sometimes, CPAP can’t address everything. Conditions like restless legs, insomnia, or nasal congestion can continue to disrupt sleep despite therapy.

5. Habits and lifestyle factors

Irregular sleep schedules, late caffeine or alcohol, or a disruptive bedroom environment can all reduce CPAP effectiveness, leaving you tired no matter how faithfully you use your machine.

The key takeaway: Persistent fatigue is usually a sign that therapy isn’t fully optimised - not a failure on your part. Understanding the reasons, tracking your therapy, and getting guidance when needed are essential steps to finally feel the benefits of CPAP.
