Throat Exercises Are Not a Reliable or Effective Treatment for OSA

Let’s clear something up.
There’s a growing wave of posts, videos, and so-called “sleep hacks” floating around - gadgets, tapes, pillows, jaw aligners... and now, throat exercises to cure sleep apnea.
No. Sorry, but no.
While throat or oropharyngeal exercises (sometimes called "myofunctional therapy") may offer slight improvement in cases of mild obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), they are not a substitute for evidence-based treatments - especially if you have moderate to severe OSA.
Here’s what the actual research shows:
Clinical studies that report benefits from throat exercises almost exclusively involve patients with mild OSA.
In moderate to severe cases, the airway obstruction is too significant. Exercises simply don’t make enough of a difference.
Even if improvement is noted, it’s small and usually not enough to avoid using a CPAP machine or considering other medical interventions.
Let’s not forget the commitment required: exercises must be done daily, often for months. There’s no immediate result. And realistically, most people don’t stick with it.
Even in best-case scenarios, the exercises reduce symptoms - they don’t eliminate OSA.
I'll say it again. Throat exercises are not Treatment for OSA.
And that’s the problem. False hope can delay proper treatment. People avoid CPAP or surgery, thinking they’ve found a simpler way. Meanwhile, the serious health risks of untreated OSA - heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, fatigue-related accidents - remain.
The bottom line is this: throat exercises might play a minor supporting role at best, but they are not a standalone solution. If you’ve been diagnosed with OSA, especially moderate or severe, don’t gamble with your health. CPAP works - and it saves lives.
If you have a CPAP machine and it’s not working for you, reach out to us at Sleepin’ the Dream. One of our offers will be able to help you get on track and stay that way. It's about the long term efficacy....and your health.
