Keeping your CPAP clean and using the right water in your humidifier are small habits that make a big difference. Proper care helps prevent bacteria, mould, and other issues, and ensures your therapy is effective and comfortable.

1. What Water to Use in Your Humidifier
Tap water: Safe and convenient. The humidifier heats the water, killing most bacteria, so it’s perfectly fine to use. It won’t harm your machine.
Cold water/ice: Some users prefer cooler water. This is okay, but colder water produces less humidity, which may reduce comfort.
Warm water: Room temperature or slightly warm water works well. Do not boil or heat water specifically for the humidifier.
2. Cleaning Routine
Daily:
Wipe your mask and headgear.
Empty the water chamber and leave it to air dry.
These simple steps prevent residue build-up and keep your CPAP fresh.
Weekly:
Wash masks, tubing, headgear, and humidifier chamber with mild soap. Rinse thoroughly.
For a deeper clean of the water chamber:
Mix a vinegar solution - 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts warm water.
Fill the chamber and soak for 15-30 minutes.
Rinse thoroughly to remove all vinegar.
Let air dry completely.
Important: Do not use strong cleaners, bleach, or abrasive scrubbing. Plastic can be damaged or leave harmful residues.
Monthly:
Inspect all parts for wear, damage, or residue. Replace as needed.
3. Why Cleaning Matters
Regular cleaning:
Protects against bacteria, mould, and dust.
Ensures therapy stays effective.
Prevents skin irritation, odours, and mask leaks caused by residue or mineral build-up.
Small, consistent habits - wiping daily, emptying water, and routine inspections - make CPAP use smoother, more comfortable, and more effective.
